Space Tech & Innovation + Biotechnology
Pablo Calvo Fernández is a Biotechnologist and Innovation Consultant specialized in the intersection of Biotechnology and Bio-regenerative Life Support Systems (BLSS). With a career built on bridging the gap between space research and terrestrial applications, he currently serves as a Strategic Advisor at Semilla IPStar, a key partner in the European Space Agency’s MELiSSA Foundation. In this role, he leads the transformation of complex space-based circular economy concepts into viable business models, focusing on technology transfer and the sustainability of future extra-terrestrial habitats.
His academic and research background is rooted in Astrobiology, specifically studying crop adaptability for Mars. His work explores how non-thermal plasma and other biotechnological tools can enhance plant resilience in extreme environments. This scientific rigor is complemented by his experience as an Innovation Consultant with Eatable Adventures, where he has advised companies on integrating sustainable technologies to optimize food production under resource-constrained conditions.
Beyond his professional consultancy, Pablo is a dedicated "Maker" driven by a personal passion for self-sufficient systems. He has developed his own domestic prototypes of aquaponics and insect farming, treating them as small-scale testbeds for the closed-loop systems that will one day sustain human life on the Moon or Mars. This "hands-on" approach, combined with a strategic mindset, allows him to understand both the molecular challenges of a crop and the industrial scalability of a project. Through BioSpace Futures, he aims to collaborate on initiatives that redefine how we produce resources, ensuring that the lessons learned from the space help us protect and nourish our own planet.
